MARG DUBOWSKI

About the artist
My artistic inspiration and practice began as a child, while accompanying my maternal grandparents as they painted 'en plein air' in Australia's Eastern forests. A lifelong passion for graphite drawing and a fascination with the interplay of light, colour and form, have underpinned my art practices ever since. Best known for my love of botanical drawing, I have, in recent years, become a successful painter, exploring subjects such as still life and portraiture.

In 2020, I suffered a condition which resulted in significant vision impairment, but rather than giving up on my practice I adapted it by scaling things up to much larger works on canvas and linen. I work in acrylics, oils and mixed media, integrating a variety of techniques to embolden or soften my work according to subject. During the course of my recovery, I have continued to work at this scale as my preference but am gradually returning to smaller works on paper whenever possible.

In 2023 I was awarded a ‘Muse and Maker’ scholarship to work with Fiona Hall in August 2024. One of my current areas of interest is marine flora and seaweeds, and I am also preparing a body of work for my first solo exhibition, ‘Still Light’ – date and venueTBA. – while teaching beginner classes to women my age.
