Artist Statement
My work investigates identity, politics and my connection to place and my mixed European cultural heritage and how that affects my relation to the Australian environment.
I am primarily a fibre artist with an interest in process driven work where I work with natural materials harvested from my local environment. Harvesting, processing and preparing natural materials attunes me to the ancient practices of those who came before me and the ethos of taking only what I need. Age old basketry techniques such as weft twining, weaving, braiding and stitching play an important part in the construction of my sculptural work.
Paper too plays an important part in my practice through making wearable art and artists books. I love the versatility of paper and its ability to be made into string and cloth. Paper is ancient and complex.
